They’re energetic, self-reliant, money-wise, and they enjoy traveling, love and intimacy. "The inhabitants of the rainforest must be allowed to speak for themselves," wrote Bruno Manser in 1992. At first glance, a European living with the Penan of Sarawak may have seemed like a quaint curiosity, but Manser was careful to redirect public attention to where it was most needed – the plight of his adopted people, beleaguered by human rights abuses and the destruction of their home. One thing Bruno managed to do before he disappeared to form the Bruno Manser Fonds (yes it’s spelled ‘fonds’ #becosswiss) or BMF for short.

Bruno Manser, one of the founders of the Bruno Manser Fund and for many years its chair, was during his lifetime the best-known Swiss rainforest campaigner and human-rights activist. From 1984 until 1990, he lived amongst the Penan people in Sarawak, who were then one of the last groups on earth to still be living as nomads in the primeval forest. If looked at carelessly, it can be tempting to portray Bruno Manser as a typical white-saviour figure: a young European man, travelling to the tropics, getting involved in the indigenous struggle for land rights, travelling back to Switzerland to raise awareness about their cause and getting in the spotlights while speaking in the name of the native people. Bruno Manser Born in 1954 in Basel, Switzerland, Manser was from an early age interested in indigenous cultures and living close to nature. After several years as a shepherd in the Swiss Alps, Manser joined the Penan nomads of Sarawak, Malaysia. He stayed with them for six years before finally fleeing the country with a bounty on his head. Bruno Manser started to get involved in the protection of the forest and, after his return from Sarawak, founded the Bruno Manser Fonds in 1992.
